Applications of Integrating Sphere Labsphere
Integrating sphere is a device used to measure radiant flux. The
flux is then carefully monitored either directly or when it comes in contact
with a sample. One of the key applications of integrating sphere labsphere is measuring transmittance or
reflectance through scattering or diffuse materials.

Radiometer and
photometer
Integrating sphere
labsphere when combined with a photodetector which is of the correct
spectral response is utilized to calculate the gross geometric flux coming out
of a light source. Flux density too of the illuminated areas can be calculated.
It is the spectral properties of the light source which helps in
deciding the right photodetection system. This is the first application.
The Sphere
Photometer
By far the oldest of all the applications of integrating sphere is counting gross of geometric luminous flux
from electric lamps. This method began towards the beginning of the 20th
century. It was used to compare lumen output of different types of lamps. Lamp
industry is still using this widely.
Another method is goniophotometer. This is required to rotate a
photodetector around the lamp in a complete sphere.
Laser Power Meters
Apart from the main application of reflectance and transmittance,
another application of integrating
sphere labsphere is using a port that opens up into an internally
illuminated integrating sphere as a big source with constant radiance.
All these sources are utilized for fine tuning electronic imaging
devices/systems or just back illuminators.
Reflectance and Transmittance of Materials
This is the main
application of integrating sphere.
It is used to calculate reflectance and transmittance of scattering or diffuse
materials. It is always done as an outcome of wavelength.
Diffuse transmittance
helps in calculating the UV resistance of pharmaceutical containers, automotive
paints and pharmaceutical containers in the ultraviolet.
The colors of various
materials are checked in paint, textile and graphic arts industry in the
visible industry.
The sum total of
hemispherical reflectance calculates surface emissivities, which then analyzes radiant heat transfer of the
thermal control coatings and foils of spacecraft design.
