Different Classes of Calibration Weights

Laboratories that are concerned with quantitative analysis require stringent calibration of scales. Nowadays, modern scales are used, whose precision is largely dependent on the accuracy of calibration weight in the United States. The accuracy of the scale depends on the grades of stainless steel and other contributing factors.

There are different classes of calibrated weight which is defined by the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) These calibration weight is available with certificates in the United States.

Class E1: These weights are the highest accuracy class, and are intended to use for traceability between national mass standards and OIML class E2 weight and lower. The maximal permissible error from the nominal value at 1 kg is ±0.5 mg. This class of calibration weight is used as primary laboratory reference standard in the United States.

Class E2: Weights that are intended for use in the verification or calibration of class F1 weights and with the weighing instruments of special accuracy class 1. It should be accompanied by a calibration certificate. They are used as a class E1 weights if they fulfill the certain requirements for class E1 like surface roughness, magnetic susceptibility, and magnetization. It is used as a high precision standard for calibration of weights and special precision analytical instruments.

Class F1: This class of weight is intended for the use in the verification of calibration of class F2 weights and for the use with weighing instruments of special accuracy class I and high accuracy class II.

Class F2: It is suitable for the use for traceability of OIML class M1 weights and lower and also with OIML accuracy class II weighing instruments. This class of calibration weight is widely used as a working standard for precision and analytical work, build-in weights, and in high-value commercial transactions such as gold and precious stones in the United States. The maximum permissible error from the nominal value at 1 kg is ±16 mg.

Class M1: This class of weight is used in the verification or calibration of class M2 weights and for the accuracy of OIML class II weighing instruments. The maximum permissible error from the nominal value at 1 kg is ±50 mg.

Class M2: This class of weight is suitable for use in verification or calibration of OIML class M3 weights, and also OIML accuracy class III weighing instruments. It is commonly used in normal commercial transactions where goods are sold by weight. The maximum permissible error from the nominal value at 1 kg is ±160 mg.

Class M3: Weight intended for use with weighing instruments of medium accuracy class III and ordinary accuracy class IIII. The maximum permissible error from the nominal value at 1 kg is ±500 mg.
